Meet Our Teachers
Indira’s earliest ‘fitness-related’ childhood memories are of her father – shaking her and her brothers’ awake everyday at the crack of dawn for a jog/swim/rowing/tennis. “Even the hapless family dog was not spared!” she says. As kids, she and her brothers despised their dad’s strict nature, but today she is deeply grateful to him for instilling a lifelong commitment to physical fitness. Her dad is her first guru – his photograph occupies a pride of place in her Yoga room. Her first encounter with Yoga was a complimentary class held in her college in Chennai. She enjoyed it thoroughly but did not pursue it – finding Jane Fonda and step aerobics so much more ‘glamorous’ and exciting. At that time, she says, ‘I had zero knowledge of just how incredible an art and science Yoga is.’ Following a Masters in Communication, Indira began a 25 year long career in Advertising. The stress – and eventually – the meaninglessness of her work led her to dive deeper into the practice of Yoga. Initially, it was about mastering the Asanas, but a couple of years later, her Ashtanga Yoga teacher introduced her to the philosophy behind the practice, and there was no looking back. With her guru’s blessings, the next several years were an ‘insane’ mix of Advertising, intense personal sadhana, and study of Yoga philosophy. Quitting advertising was, she says – inevitable.
She completed her RYT 200 and 300 and has, since then, been teaching full-time at a1000yoga. In the last three years she has been on the faculty of a1000yoga’s Teacher Training Certification Courses as well.
Irrespective of the ‘style’ of Yoga, her approach is to give her practitioners more than just a physical workout. “Yoga is so much more than asana – and I always attempt to include a hint of that in my classes. I think of it as scattering a handful of seeds into the earth. Who knows – one or two may sprout!”. She is one of a1000yoga’s most experienced teachers – but Indira believes her Yoga journey has only just begun. ‘My exploration of Yoga is now slowly making me a bit of a social misfit’, she says. ‘I am becoming more and more indifferent to everything the world values. I question everything – including my own reactions. I watch myself do/say/want things and think how pointless it is to do/say/want those things. It’s a crazy way to live. But I’m not turning back.’
It was in San Francisco in 2008, that Nishara conducted her first Yoga class, at the Sivananda Ashram Centre. She was initially nervous, but “being an Indian, with the ‘exotic’ looks paid off.” While she used to go to the Gym and also do Aerobics, there was something missing. She used to work in Public relations, and soon realized that it was not really her calling. “A corporate job was not my cup of tea”. She started learning Yoga in 2005 and started teaching since 2008. She specializes in Hata and Sivananda. She has also completed her Advanced Teacher Training Course (ATTC) at the Sivananda Ashram at Neyyar Dam. Her shortness of breath and carpel tunnel syndrome are both in check with the regular practice of Yoga. She truly embodies the youthfulness of Yoga, as no one would believe her age, even if she told you.
“Yoga rocks!! Yoga is my life, my breath, my everything!!”

Uma’s early experiences with yoga strictly adhered to Yogic principles that included practicing before sunrise on an empty stomach. She could not escape these classes; her father was the instructor, and she needed Yoga to battle certain health issues. She soon took a liking to Karate and eventually practiced and taught Karate for 6 years in Chennai. An Arts graduate with a specialization in English Literature, she later went on to pursue an associate degree in International Business in the US where she made a home away from home. She worked there as an Internal Auditor for one of the top banks in the US for about 5 years. When she moved back to India after 15 years, she turned to Yoga to help resolve certain health issues after her second pregnancy. Thanks to her yoga practice, her migraines are now non-existent, cholesterol levels are in check and the unhealthy weight gain has been reduced gradually and naturally.
Uma’s yoga qualifications are extensive. She is an M.Sc in Yogic Sciences, E-RYT500, RYT500, RCYT (Children’s Yoga) and RPYT(Prenatal Yoga), Government of India’s Ministry of Ayush Level 2 Certified Yoga Teacher. She is also an official yoga examiner with APMG International that conducts Yoga Certification Board exams for the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.
Along with her teaching services, Uma is completing a Masters degree in Sanskrit, Karnataka Samskrit University, Bangalore to bring the disciplines of Yoga and Ayurveda (for mental and physical well-being) together through the original and authentic medium of Sanskrit. Her experience includes teaching and propagating yoga, Ayurveda in Germany, Austria, and Spain. Currently pioneers destination yoga certification courses to Europe and North America in a1000yoga and Yoga Sattwa. Also consults on yoga strategy and design for Altlifelab Solution’s war on lifestyle diseases http://www.altlifelab.com/
“I design my classes to work slowly into classical practices with spine orientation, awareness, correction and strengthening. I like to end my classes bringing the awareness of practitioners to one simple question “how did you feel before practice and how do you feel after practice”.
She takes a passionate interest in the wholesome education of her children. For Uma, Yoga means “Transformation. Looking back I can say it is the transformation for the better. At the moment, it is still a transformation into the next moment.”

Pradeep spend two full years imbibing and living yoga at Gangadarshan, a Yoga gurukula along the banks of river Ganga in Bihar. He has now completed first 12 year phase of discipleship.
Under Shri Pattabi Jois’ AYRI, Bangalore, he gained clarity of the nuances of Ashtanga Yoga – primary Series. His Iyengar Yoga training was under Shri Arun, Bangalore, a direct disciple of Shri BKS Iyengar of Pune, India.
Pradeep is an engineering graduate by education, entrepreneur by vocation, and a Hata yogi by samskara. He draws immensely from his past experiences, a wealth of knowledge specific to Yoga, Ayurveda and Indian philosophies, bringing into each engagement an Authentic and a holistic approach.
He started practicing yoga as a seven year old, learning classical asanas from his father and later devoted full time to studying yoga, graduating M.Sc. program in Yogic sciences (from the world’s first yoga university, Bihar Yoga Bharati, Munger, India, with a university gold medal).
He has been teaching yoga in Mysore, Bangalore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo, and Hyderabad and is adept at Bihar, Iyengar and Ashtanga schools of yoga. Pradeep currently heads a1000yoga and facilitates teacher training courses at the 200 hour, 500 hour levels and specialization yoga courses for Prenatal, Sports and Children. He has been training and mentoring over 1000 budding yoga teachers since 2006.
Pradeep believes and practices “Yoga for Yoga” .
“Sometimes you have moved so much that it takes a while to understand when that happened; the very first experience of Yoga (Asanas, now that I can differentiate Yoga is not just Asana practice) was in Bangalore in a form called Artistic Yoga. Loved it, as I was able to do many of the things asked by the instructor. Before Yoga I tried free flow dance/aerobics and the likes but this experience was more interesting for me.” Rubina has an MBA with a Marketing specialization and worked in Integrated Marketing Communication. Work has always been very enriching for her although this realization was only after she started practicing Yoga. Getting to combine Yoga (practice/teaching) with her academic qualifications and work experience was like a combo delight for her as she has worked at a1000yoga for more than two years handling Marketing and Communications. Rubina practiced Yoga on and off since 2006 but seriously started learning in 2011 and has been teaching since 2013. She loves the Hata style and also imbibes a few of the therapy elements (learnt from self experience of severe back and shoulder condition) depending on the practitioner’s needs. For her a practice session is something that can flow with ease, from posture to posture with breath, to bring awareness of your whole existence. Rubina likes gardening and obsessively cleaning her home, reading and spreading the joy of Yoga.
“Yoga for me is a journey towards FREEDOM. Freedom from anything that is stopping me from realizing my potential. Yoga is a tool for me to be at peace with the flow of life.”

Shobhit’s first yoga experience was in 2010 and there has been no looking back since then. He was always intrigued by the science & philosophy behind this ancient art, and pursued a Hatha Yoga teacher training under the guidance of Pradeep Sattwamaya. As he progressed on his journey, his interest in psychology & self-inquiry guided him to do a teacher training in Yoga Nidra with Swami Yogaratna Saraswati. He feels blessed to have been mentored by his teachers, who are both disciples of Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati (Satyananda Bihar Yoga tradition).
Shobhit specialises in Advanced Yoga Nidra & Pratyahara practices. He advocates a holistic approach of movement, breathing, mindfulness & introspection. He is also a UX Design Consultant and studies human behaviour to solve problems through design. His primary passion is teaching yoga, but he enjoys the balance between the two. “Yoga, in it’s simplest essence, is awareness. It has been a pillar in my journey of transformation and my motivation is to share the practice & philosophy as a way of life in the modern world. After all, the real yoga begins when you leave the mat to experience daily life situations”
